First Ride Program

First Ride Program

A first-time rider guide for students and families.

The First Ride Program helps new bus riders and their parent/guardian learn how school busing works, what to expect at the bus stop, how to ride safely, and how to feel prepared before the first day of school.

What to Expect

The First Ride Program is a collaborative effort between First Student, GP Catholic, and GP Public Schools. It is designed for students who are using the yellow school bus system for the first time.

During the event, parents/guardians and children will participate in a school bus safety presentation, have time for questions, and enjoy a short school bus ride.

Students from all grade levels are welcome to attend if they are new to busing or would like a refresher.

How Riding the Bus Works

For families new to busing, here is what a typical school bus routine looks like:

  1. Before the first day: Review your child’s bus stop location, pickup time, route number, and school information. It can help to visit the bus stop with your child ahead of time.
  2. In the morning: Students should arrive at the bus stop before the scheduled pickup time. Parents/guardians are responsible for their child’s safety before the child boards the bus.
  3. Getting on the bus: Students wait until the bus is fully stopped, the door is open, and the driver signals that it is safe to board. Students board one at a time, use the handrail, scan their bus pass if required, and go directly to a seat.
  4. During the ride: Students remain seated, keep the aisle clear, use a quiet voice, and follow the driver’s directions.
  5. Arriving at school: Students stay seated until the bus has fully stopped and the driver says it is time to unload. Students go directly to the school entrance, transfer bus if applicable, or the area directed by school staff.
  6. After school: Students go to their assigned bus loading area and board the correct bus. Families can help by reviewing the bus number, route name, and what to do if their child is unsure.
  7. Getting off the bus: Students wait until the bus has fully stopped, use the handrail, step down carefully, move away from the bus, and follow the driver’s instructions. Parents/guardians are responsible for their child’s safety after the child gets off the bus.

Helpful tip: Practice the routine before the first day. Walk to the bus stop, talk about where to stand, review the bus number, and remind your child who will meet them after school.

A little practice can make the first day feel much easier.
