- The benchmark tracking sheets provide the necessary information for a teacher to start the differentiated program needed for that student. (For strategies to help guide ELL instruction - refer to Best Practices which is an ELL website created by Black Gold, Edmonoton, Elk Island, Evergreen Fort McMurray, Grande Yellowheat, Greater St.Albert Northern Gateway, St.Albert, St.Paul and Calgary Regional Consortium).

Gr1-8 Teachers
- Grades 1-8 schools are to collect data and then highlight/anecdotal notes on the 27 page Ab.Ed planning document within 1 month of arrival to the school. See student records as the benchmark and assessments may have already been completed in June of previous year. If not, all teachers of ELL students need to do the following;
- F & P assessment (English schools)
- Data collected through guided reading / 1-1 instruction within the classroom
- Writing sample corrected using the 6 sections of writing (linguistic vocabulary, linguistic grammar, strategic, socio-linguistic, discourse, editing) within the 27 page document.
Teachers keep the benchmark tracking sheets on the guided reading table, or close proximity to ensure they make reference to it, as well as date it with anecdotal notes of the child progress at each reporting period.(3)
