High School Boundary & Grade Change

As a community of families, students, and staff, this is an exciting time for Grande Prairie & District Catholic Schools. In 2017-2018, we will be opening St. John Paul II Junior-Senior Catholic High School.

We are also excited for the reconfiguring of existing schools into a Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 7 and Grade 8 to 12 format. In the process of opening a new school and ensuring we offer the best possible experience for our community, we will evaluate our existing attendance boundaries and address the needs of each of our facilities. Our district has seen significant growth, which has resulted in increasing student enrolment. Due to the increase, our schools are currently functioning at or above capacity. With the addition of St. John Paul II school and our reconfiguration plan, we will be able to offer more opportunities and continue to meet the needs all our students and families.

This page will act as a hub for all information that comes out regarding the High School Boundary & Grade Change. Stay tuned as we continue to release information over the coming months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When would these changes take effect?
A: Last year when we spoke with parents, we indicated that St. John Paul II would open in September 2017, but due to delays in the tendering and awarding of tender, Phase 1 of the school will now be completed by October 31, 2017. To ensure that we have sufficient time to move into our new home, we plan to open St. John Paul II to students on January 31, 2018 (Semester 2 of the 2017-2018 school year).   In 2018-2019, all K to 8 schools will become K to 7 schools with a Primary/Middle school format. In 2018-2019, the two Junior/Senior High schools will become Grade 8 to 12 schools with a Junior/Senior high school format. For more detail on when the changes would take effect and how each school would be affected, please read the Initial Letter to Parents & Staff.

Q: Will the changes affect the elementary boundary?
A: No, the elementary boundaries were changed in the 2015-2016 school year. They will remain unaltered during this process.

Q: Does my child have to attend their designated boundary school or can they attend a different school of choice?
A: Transportation will be provided to programs of choice (Immersion and Montessori) and to their boundary high school. If families wish to attend a school outside their boundary, they have the option to do so as long as they transport themselves.

Q: How flexible will the Boundaries be? Can I attend both high schools?
A: We will be discussing the possibility of allowing Grade 10-12 students to attend one school in the morning and one school in the afternoon if programming is not available in their boundary school. The district may be interested in providing transportation for this “single campus” model to occur.

Q: When will we have the opportunity to provide feedback on the changes and how will it be incorporated in the process?
A: Conversation Cafes will be held during the months of January and February 2017. Trustees, the superintendent, principals, and the Education Leadership team will be discussing all possibilities and feedback with the community.

Q: How will the public be kept up to date on the work?
A: Direct bi-weekly email newsletters will be released directly to parents. Each of our schools within Grande Prairie, as well as the Catholic Education Centre, will contain accessible information. Along with the Conversation Cafes, all current information will be available at our website, GPCSD.ca

Q: Who can I speak with about the process?
A: You can speak with your school’s principal, or you can send us an email to communications@gpcsd.ca
